BIOGRAPHY
– Kathrine Breeden. A “Truly Dog Friendly” Trainer
Certified by Victoria Stilwell – the First in Texas!
Kathrine came to Dallas from England in 1999 and brought her horse with her! She has been an animal lover her whole life – being with dogs and riding horses since she was 7. She became a member of the Anti Vivisection Society at the age of 10.
She believes that the traditional methods of dog training using various forms of physical force and psychological abuse and intimidation are not only cruel and ineffective but hamper the development of the optimum relationship between dog and human. Such methods often cause dogs to display aggressive behaviors that could otherwise have been avoided.
As the first trainer in Texas to be Certified by Victoria Stilwell (TV show on Animal Planet “It’s Me Or The Dog”) Kathrine is personally endorsed by Victoria Stilwell as an accomplished positive reinforcement-based dog training professional who brings a wealth of experience and expertise to her clients and the community.
She is very proud to be working with Victoria and the other certified VSPDT trainers to spread the word about positive reinforcement training being the only way to go when training dogs. She will never endorse the use of shock, prong & choke collars.
She has an in-depth knowledge and understanding of positive reinforcement and clicker training, attending seminars and studying the books, videos and papers of Patricia McConnell, Ph.D, Dr. Ian Dunbar, Victoria Stilwell, Turid Rugaas, Deborah A. Jones Ph.D., Sue Sternberg, Emma Parsons. Brenda Aloff, John Rogerson, Trish King, Terry Ryan, Lee Mannix (RIP), Susan Garrett, Casey Matthews Lomonaco, Alexandra Kurland and Dr Jesus Rosales Ruiz to name but a few.
She has an avid interest in dog behavior and is a Member of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers.
The Association of Pet Dog Trainers (APDT), founded in 1993 by Dr. Ian Dunbar, is a professional organization of individual trainers committed to better training through education. An important part of the APDT mission is to advocate gentle, humane, "dog- friendly" methods of training. Kathrine supports and abides by the APDT mission and ethics statements. All lessons for puppies and dogs are based on positive reinforcement (reward based) methods. She is also well educated on canine health, nutrition and first aid.
She is an Affiliate Member of the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants.
IAABC members work to minimize the use of aversive stimuli and maximize the effective use of reinforcers to modify animal behavior.
She is a Licensed Presenter for the Dogs & Storks Program – a high quality program that focuses on practical, fun and positive ways growing families can include their family dog. It provides affordable, practical and positive solutions for new and expecting families.
Since 2002 Dogs & Storks has provided hundreds of families with support and resources to help set up and enhance long term success with family dogs and children.
She has been a dedicated volunteer for DFW Labrador Retriever Rescue, evaluating and rescuing Labradors from the shelters of the DFW Metroplex.
She is an active campaigner against puppy mills and can be seen almost every Saturday afternoon demonstrating outside the Petland store in Frisco with other animal lovers. Please join them!! For more information go to www.stoppuppymills.org and the Facebook Page “Petland Protest Frisco”.
Her most recent volunteer project has involved her working with a fearful dog who lives in an Assisted Living Facility in Frisco. She has donated countless hours helping the dog overcome his fear of men – particularly those in uniform!
She currently shares her home with her two rescued Labradors, Tess and Pinky, rescued toy poodle, Bilo, and her very understanding husband, AJ.
